The Acolyte was Colonel Joshua's spaceship. On the P'tarr planet, it gave him information about the surrounding area.
When Joshua realised the horror of what he had become as a partially Cyberconverted human, he killed himself on the Acolyte bridge. (PROSE: One Bad Apple)
