The Fourth Doctor had a "detective outfit". (AUDIO: The Merfolk Murders [+]Loading...["The Merfolk Murders (audio story)"]) It consisted of a plaid Inverness caped coat over a velvet patterned jacket with a dotted texture, a print waistcoat, a red tie with scattered polkadots, tweed trousers, whites gloves and a deerstalker cap.

During the Mystery of the Missing Girls, Casey remarked that the Fourth Doctor didn't look like a detective. (TV: The Talons of Weng-Chiang [+]Loading...["The Talons of Weng-Chiang (TV story)"]) However, this outfit would inspire Arthur Conan Doyle's depiction of Sherlock Holmes. (PROSE: Evolution [+]Loading...["Evolution (novel)"])
