Described as a "rake", he had "dishonoured" Lord Galpin's sister in numerous locations, including the library, the kitchen and the stables. During a ball thrown by the Duchess, Barton was confronted by Galpin about his behaviour, to which Barton responded by suggesting Galpin challenge him to a duel.
