Commander Burton was a Royal Navy officer in the 1970s. He was briefed on UNIT whilst training at Dartmouth.
During a joint exercise between the navy and NATO, Commander Burton captained the HMS Nemesis and brought Arianda's spaceship aboard after it was hit by depth charges. He contacted UNIT and was sent help in the form of the Third Doctor, Jo Grant and Major Paul Hardy, the latter of whom was erased from history thanks to Arianda's time energy along with several of Burton's marines.
