History
According to a brief conversation between Christine (a psychiatrist) and Amelia Pond's aunt Sharon, people seeing or believing in stars was common throughout history, and thus Star Cults appeared to be somewhat well-known.
Sharon expressed worries that Amy would grow up into joining a Star Cult and that she didn't "trust that Richard Dawkins". (DW: The Big Bang)
