Betty was an old woman who lived by herself. Her health suffered shortly for a while after taking in a stray which she believed was a Yorkshire Terrier that she named Pookie. But Pookie was actually a Kera-Bera Beast feeding off of her energy. Without her awareness the Doctor and Amy managed to break the beasts influence and pacify it into believing it was a Yorkshire Terrier through the use of a converted hairdryer at Betty’s local salon.
