James Bond

James Bond was a fictional secret agent created by author Ian Fleming in the mid-20th century. Some 50 novels chroncling the character's exploits were written by Fleming and others over the next 50 years, and the character was featured in a long-running series of motion pictures from the early 1960s.

• According to one account of the First Doctor's final adventure, Ben Jackson, a man from the mid-1960s, viewed a Bond film starring Roger Moore in 2000 (DWN: Doctor Who and the Tenth Planet); however another account says Jackson actually viewed an unidentified western film in 1986 (DW: The Tenth Planet). Although Moore had not taken on the role of Bond when the serial was first broadcast in 1966, he had already made two Bond films by the time author Gerry Davis' novelisation was published in 1976. It is also worthy of note that by 1986, Roger Moore was no longer Bond. The role eventually went to Timothy Dalton, but in 1986 it was offered to Pierce Brosnan, although it's possible that Ben was viewing the 1985 film A View to a Kill, which did star Moore.
• Jo Grant, who supposedly worked for UNIT as a secret agent, complained that contrary to the beliefs of her family and friends, her real life involved much more drudgery than the glamorized life of James Bond. (DW: Frontier in Space)
• Sarah Jane Smith jokingly referred to Harry Sullivan as 'James Bond'. (DW: Robot)
• When the Tenth Doctor and Martha Jones went to attend Lazarus' experiment, Martha commented that the Doctor looked like James Bond due to his decision to wear a black-tie tuxedo for the occasion. (DW: The Lazarus Experiment)
• Ianto Jones is a big Bond fan, occasionally having 'Bondathons' of all his favorite James Bond movies (TWN:Trace Memory)

Behind the Scenes

• During location filming at Lanzarote for Planet of Fire, Peter Davison posed for publicity photos for Planet of Fire with a prop gun and tuxedo with a bikini-clad Nicola Bryant by his side, in a classically Bond-like pose, to announce her debut as Peri Brown. Jason Kane also adopts a "Bond pose" on the cover of Deadfall by Gary Russell.
• Fans have jokingly speculated that Bond may be a Time Lord as he changes his appearance every few years. In the trailer to GoldenEye (though not in the film itself), Pierce Brosnan's first words as Bond, "You were expecting someone else?", echo the Sixth Doctor's first words after his regeneration in the last few moments of The Caves of Androzani. Which could mean that James Bond is a Time Lord; however this is not likely, due to James Bond being a character in a completely unrelated set of stories.
• The Curse of Fatal Death was shot in Pinewood Studios, famous for being the studios used for the James Bond films.
• Doctor Who and the James Bond film franchise share common ground in terms of longevity, with both being revived successfully after lengthy hiatuses.
• Many Doctor Who guest actors have appeared in the Bond film series over the years, including Honor Blackman, Julian Glover, John Cleese, Burt Kwouk, Catherine Schell, Jeremy Bulloch, Philip Locke, and Joanna Lumley; several others, including Bernard Cribbins and Dave Prowse, appeared in 1967's Casino Royale, a James Bond spoof not considered part of the main series of films. Rowan Atkinson and Pamela Salem (playing Miss Moneypenny) also appeared in 1983's Never Say Never Again, an independently made Bond film again not connected to the main series. Writer/script editor Gary Russell played a small role in Octopussy near the end of his career as a child/teen actor. To date only one actor who actually played James Bond has appeared in Doctor Who: Timothy Dalton, who guest starred as Rassilon in DW: The End of Time.
• In the 1990s an animated series James Bond Jr. was produced. A series of novelisations based upon the show by "John Vincent" were published -- this was a pseudonym for Doctor Who novelist John Peel.
