In Doctor Who and Torchwood, Captain Jack Harkness owns a device known as a Vortex Manipulator which is said that it can travel through time.

Although it was generally used by the Agency, the [[Family of Blood (Species)|Family of Blood]] stole one to follow [[Tenth Doctor|the Doctor]] around the [[universe]]. In the Doctor Who episode Utopia Jack Harkness claims that he used it to travel in time but he gets the time travel wrong and he lands in the 19th century and the Vortex Manipulator burnt out and so he had to live through the 19th and 20th century waiting for the Doctor after he was abandoned by the Doctor.


Appearance

The Vortex Manipulator looks like a brown sweat band on the left wrist of Jack Harkness which can flip switches and control things for a short time. Captain Jack is never seen without it on his wrist.

A vortex manipulator was a form of basic time machine developed by the Time Agency of the 51st century. Although it was generally used by the Agency, the Family of Blood stole one to follow the Doctor around the universe. (DW: Human Nature)

The Doctor considered it very primitive compared to a TARDIS, describing his TARDIS as a "sports car" to Jack Harkness's "space hopper".
