K9 Mark I survived the Last Great Time War, despite have been destroyed earlier. Some point later he went to the year 50'000 and met Zanthus Pia, Head of the Galatic Peace Commission who he saw murdered at the hands of Ahab. Being a witness to the murder Ahab's four Jixen friends attacked K9 (K9TV: The Bounty Hunter). He and the Jixen were pulled to mid-21st century Earth via a Space-Time Manipulator to Gryffen's House, after a short battle K9 self-destructed to save the Humans in the vicinity. Starkey retrieved K9's regeneration circuit, allowing him to rebuild completely. After introducing himself he completed his "orientation protocol", determining he was in London. Alistair Gryffen then studied this "Fallen Angel", though K9 could come and go as he pleased. Gryffen didn't tell his employers, The Department of this, but they saw CCTV footage of the night of the explosion. Soon, Starkey arrived, after escaping from the Department virtual reality detention facility and sprayed by a Jixen. K9 confused him for a Jixen and was about to kill him, when he recited the patronising words he gave K9 after his creation and the dog realised that he was Human. June Turner came to interrogate Gryffen, whilst K9 hid with Starkey. K9 gave Starkey his dog whistle, meaning he would assist Starkey if he was ever in trouble and stand at Gryffen's house, ready for more adventures. (K9TV: Regeneration)

Starkey was forced to stay at Gryffen's with K9 to hide from the Jixen. K9 detected the Jixen and informed Gryffen that the Jixen was alive and on the move in the direction of Dauntless Prison, where the Department kept captured aliens. When Darius asked why the Jixen would go to an alien prison, K9 replied because of a Meron, the Jixen's highly dangerous enemy. Starkey decided to go to the prison and get the Jixen before it got him, K9 said it wasn't a good idea as the last thing they'd want to get caught in was battle between the Merons and the Jixen, warning whole planets had been wiped out. Gryffen asked K9 to go to the prison and track the Jixen, K9 obeyed but with great discomfort similar to the mermaids of Gorgol XIII sucking dinner through their nostrils. Gryffen tracked K9 through a monitor and suggested that he backed off. While moving towards the Prison K9 was detected by the Department. When K9 entered the Department exclusion zone Inspector Drake ordered to exclude him. K9 was attacked by the Department's defense robots which disabled him and he fells in a dustbin that Starkey and Darius walked by. Gryffen kept trying to wake K9 up but he didn't respond, he eventually succeeded by creating a sound that K9 was familar with, dropping a ball over and over again. K9 reactivated, K9 then made his way to Dauntless prison. Jorjie was able to free Starkey and Darius (who were captured in the prison) and the alien prisoners. K9 went through the prison scanning for the Jixen, as the kids and the aliens ran Starkey looked behind to see if they are being followed but he was attacked by the Jixen, it corners him but K9 shots the Jixen, however had has used up all he's got and his energy levels didn't have time to reboot. Starkey and K9 lured the Jixen to the cells, Starkey put his jacket (which contained the Jixen tracking slime) in a cell which the Jixen found. Starkey then locked the cell, as they taunted the Jixen one of the scientists walked in. He morphed into his true Meron form and attacked K9, as he advanced on Starkey the Jixen emitted a loud scream which made the Meron retreat. Starkey and K9 met up with the others and Darius managed to unlock the door, but they were met by June who told them they were blocked by a forcefield and ordered the aliens to return to their cells. The Jixen arrived and attacked Starkey and June, K9 tried to fight it but exhausted his firepower. Starkey was able to attach June's locking device set to self-destruct to the Jixen, killing it. Jorjie said they make quite a team, Darius agrees. Starkey asked K9 what he thought, he called the assessment logical, amusing the kids. Starkey then fainted. That night, he woke up in Gryffen's House with K9 by his side. Starkey then accepted Darius' wishes and left as he had a job to do, Starkey thanked K9 for saving him from "termination" before he left. Later when Starkey hacked into the display board terminal again K9 moved to protect him from the CCPCS and they both ran away. (K9TV: Liberation)

After he defeated Ahab, who tried to convince him he murdered Zanthus Pia. He became part of the K9 Unit, being made the responsibility of Gryffen and under the control of Department inspector June Turner. (K9TV: The Bounty Hunter) He then foiled Inspector Drake's plan to control the population using Cerulium (K9TV: Sirens of Ceres) and experienced fear. (K9TV: Fear Itself) He later aided in the of defeat echoes of Gryffen's family and Orthrus, a duplicate of him created by Drake to frame him, (K9TV: Jaws of Orthrus) and the Bodach. (K9TV: Dreameaters) He was then met by Nehetka and Geb of the Anubians, a race his previous incarnation liberated. He was so obsessed with regaining his lost memories that he didn't realise Gryffen, Starkey and Jorjie's takeover by the Anubians. He soon found out when the Anubians attacked the Department, with the help of Darius he was soon able to defeat him. (K9TV: Curse of Anubis)

He later helped Starkey fight the Oroborus, (K9TV: Oroborus) freed the Medes (K9TV: Alien Avatar) and help one of the last Aeolians find her mate. (K9TV: Aeolian) He then saved a Centuripede and her young from being killed by Drake (K9TV: The Last Oak Tree) and absorbed the Black Hunger swarm which threatened to devour Earth. (K9TV: Black Hunger) He and Starkey then went through the STM to 1963 where they rescued Jorjie and saved Darius' great-grandfather William Pike from being arrested and erasing Darius from history. (K9TV: The Cambridge Spy) He enlisted the help of the Ukkan librarian Yssaringintinka to rescue Starkey who was trapped on the planet Urlic. (K9TV: Lost Library of Ukko) He later helped Birdie, a CCPC which implanted Human DNA escape from the Department. (K9TV: Mutant Copper) He then discovered the last of the Etydions (K9TV: The Custodians) and taught Taphony how to be a friend. (K9TV: Taphony and the Time Loop)

Either Inspector Thorne or Lomax found out about K9's regeneration circuit and decided to acquire it. Thorne joined forces with Freddie Maxwell, owner of Crashclub involving old robots being made to fight. K9 went undercover as a gladiator and made friends with the robot clowns Chuckles and Boris. He was called to fight the Pain-Maker who was laced with the explosive Solarmite, when he was set to self-destruct K9 detected this and fled the explosion. (K9TV: Robot Gladiators) In an attempt to regain his memory and find out his connection to the STM, K9's archieve was scrambled and directives from the STM almost caused him to self-destruct and lose all his memory. However with help of Gryffen and Starkey he was able to override the directives. (K9TV: Angel of the North) He later helped Gryffen find the STM's temporal stabiliser from the fallen angel crashsite in Canada where it was revealed to be Korven technology. (K9TV: Angel of the North) He later stopped haywire CCPCs when The Last Precinct's plan backfired. (K9TV: The Last Precinct) After this he was tricked by Thorne to give him his regeneration unit in return for a lost memory chip, however this turned him into a bomb which would make him self-destruct upon encountering Jixey however Starkey helped him disarm himself. (K9TV: Hound of the Korven)

Death

K9 Mark 2's brief life was tragically cut short when after defeating the Korven invasion force, Thorne sent the Trojan to kill the extremely weakened K9 Mark 2 but he was able to defeat it at the cost of all his energy and his power-core was now burnt out. As his regeneration unit was in the Trojan K9 died at the mansion after his companions bid farewell to him. However his regeneration unit homed itself back to it's master, triggering his rebirth into K9 Mark 3, he then flew away to have more adventures. (K9TV: Eclipse of the Korven)

Personality

This version of K9 was more upbeat and aggressive than other versions that existed in the universe. Whereas the K9s that traveled with the Doctor tended to apply logic in a somewhat cautious way —frequently arguing why the odds suggested that something couldn't be done —this K9 tended to freely place himself in harm's way. He was also more ruthless than other K9's, killing a Korven, (K9TV: The Korven) offering to have Drake taken out (K9TV: Jaws of Orthrus) and threatening him and his CCPCs with liquidation. (K9TV: Aeolian) Unlike other K9s, he gave the title of master especially to Starkey. Whereas other K9s commonly referred to all their friends as master or mistress, K9 never referred to Gryffen or Darius as master, or Jorjie or June as mistress. (K9TV: Regeneration)

He also investigated Human emotions in a more thorough way than his predecessors, and even, apparently, experienced the emotion of fear. (K9TV: Fear Itself)

His use of the English language was far more colloquial than any of his predecessors, because he had downloaded 5000 Human movies onto his memdrive, and these were influencing his speech. (K9TV: Alien Avatar) Although he did speak more technical sometimes such as when Starkey announced "kicked surveilance butt" K9 vowed to "kick surveilance posterior" whenever possible. (K9TV: The Korven) When Starkey was attacked by a Jixen, K9 recommended "rapid movement in the opposite direction of the Xenomorph". (K9TV: Liberation)

Features

K9 Mark 2 was radically altered in design and far more complex compared to Mark I. His ear probes were replaced with larger silver aerials, a set of blue lights on his head flashed when he spoke. Most of his body was dark silver in colour and a silver dog bone was located under his neck. He seemed to have the same capabilities as Mark I but was presumably more advanced. When attacked and incapacitated, he could give his living metal frame downtime to atune to energy signitures of weaponary with combat conditioning shielding. (K9TV: Liberation) He was also capable of emitting gas in a manner similar to flatulence. (K9TV: The Korven,Alien Avatar,Black Hunger) He was able to use a tractor beam to pull an object as large as an adolescent Humanoid, (K9TV: Fear Itself) he could also use it to absorb microsopic objects. (K9TV: Black Hunger)

This new K9 didn't have any memory of his past life, although he did regain fragments of his memory remembering some of his travels. (K9TV: Curse of Anubis) It is unknown whether he remembers or eventually will remember the Last Great Time War, Romana or Leela. However as only his memdrive was damaged and database of aliens and planets was left unharmed. It is likely he still knows about planets and races such as Gallifrey, the Time Lords, and the Sontarans. (K9TV: Regeneration)

Key Life Events

Behind the scenes

The K9 OS, clearly showing the new version to be "K9 Mark 2" (K9TV: Regeneration)
  • Although this was a "new" version of K9, it was a new incarnation of K9 Mark I, as opposed to it being a Mark V. This point was made clear in the episode K9TV: The Bounty Hunter.
  • K9 Mark 2 was designed by Paul Tams and Alex Kubalsky.
