The Internet is often used by many to download music, movies and TV series encoded from 'hardcopy' material (VHS Video, CD/DVD) into a digital media (.avi, .mp3 etc).  Shows recorded directly from TV are becoming more common, and it's in this way the future existance of popular series will be preserved, rather than reliance on 'industry' library and archiving facilities.

Search-wise.net was a search engine operational in 2005. Rose Tyler used it to search for information about the Doctor, which led her to Clive's "Doctor Who?" website. (DW: Rose)

In 2012, Henry van Statten was the self-proclaimed owner of the Internet. By that point, connections throughout the Internet became sufficiently fast for a Dalek to be able to download its entire contents within seconds. (DW: Dalek)
