Fairies, as Humans call them, are a dangerous humanoid species native to Earth. Fairies are not alien life-forms, but have lived alongside Humanity since they first developed. Their exact nature is unclear, although Jack describes them as part myth, part spirit world and part reality jumbled together, mixed with "old moments and emotions",
Powers and abilities
Not bound by normal physical laws, they can choose whether or not a camera can take their pictures. For example, they made themselves invisible to closed circuit television cameras on one occasion. On another, they enabled themselves to have photographs taken of them. They can travel through time or rather have an apparent non-linear relationship to it.
Fairies are seen in two forms: one a small, glowing humanoid form and the other a Human-sized, more monstrous form. Both forms have wings and can fly with ease. Though the story itself portrayed them as easily visible, at least in the larger form, Jack described them as only visible from the corner of one's eyes. They have precise control of weather, being able to create both sudden rainstorms and gales. It is also implied they could freeze the world. They can also kill people by filling their throats with rose petals.
History and Culture
Jack said the Fairies come from the dawn of Time, like Fenric. Humans, over time, made the fairies into something harmless and cute, however those who had encountered them, like Jack never doubted their powers.
- Jack speculates that fairies may be "part Mara", though it is unknown if he is referring to the Mara of Snakedance and Kinda or the creature from Scandinavian folklore.
Fairies don't seem to reproduce normally and instead kidnap children and turn them into fairies. They pick out children to be their Chosen One and will protect them at all costs, killing anyone who attempts to harm them. These Chosen Ones always seem slightly odd and will try to spend as much time as possible with the fairies. They generally aren't involved with the affairs of Humans, but they will violently defend any infringements on their territory and kill anyone who they feel has acted against them. (TW: Small Worlds)
Speculation
- The Fairies may be related to the Immortals, ancient, advanced Humans with a variety of 'mystical" powers. The Time Lords and the Doctor may well also know about the Fairies.
