Hope was a spaceship created by some of the last Humans, intended as a way of continuing their legacy.
Features
The Hope was made of a series of spheres, each hundred of miles wide. Inside these spheres were artifacts from Human history. These spheres were covered in engines and instruments and could be jettisoned in emergencies. The ship's defences were mainly automated, though hull-breaches had to be dealt with by the Guardians. The Guardians, who included Nart, Merik, Frica and Uri, were androids made in the image of Humans. (VD: Aliens and Predators)
History
The Hope was created at a point when Humans were nearly extinct and had long since lost the location of the Earth. When a signal that was believed to be from Earth was detected, Hope was created and filled with all the remains of Human culture. Within it was stored pureblood Human DNA, hopefully to seed Earth again. For eighty years it travelled, being menaced by the Other who wanted the DNA.
When the Doctor was investigating the Hope, he attracted the attention of the Guardians, who tried to kill him. When Jamie McCrimmon and Zoe Heriot destroyed the Gaurdians, the automatic self-destruction was activated. Though it could be delayed, the self-destruct could not be stopped. Seeing that there was no other options, the last Guardian decided to let the ship destroy itself, killing the Others who followed. (VD: Aliens and Predators)
