Black Orchid was a book written by George Cranleigh of his travels, which was published in 1925. His mother Madge Cranleigh gave a copy of the book to the Doctor as a going-away present (DW: Black Orchid), which he enjoyed and thought of as very interesting. (DW: Earthshock)
