The Ribosians were a race of humanoids native to Ribos. They were identical to Humans and one could easily pass as the other. When the Doctor came to the planet they were a relatively primitive species, giving the planet a Class 3 rating. Though they generally used simple weaponry like spears, they had invented a type of cannon. The Ribosians had a vaguely medieval-European culture. They used a type of currency called Opeks.

Graff Vynda-K and Garron both referred to their payments in Opeks. Possibly, they converted their own currency to the Ribosian one, or the Opeks were brought to Ribos previously.

The major Ribosian city was Shur, though there were backwater settlements to the North. This city held many important relics, such as a valuable crown. Near the centres of the city was the Concourse, the pedestrian area. Underneath all this was the Catacombs, where the dead were stored and packs of Shrivenzales live.

The Ribosians believed in Ice Gods and Sun Gods, which fight across Ribos. They also believed that the stars are ice crystals and there are no other planets. Anyone who doesn't believe this is tortured as a heretic. The Ribosians also believe in the Seekers, a group of women who appear have various clairvoyant powers. (DW: The Ribos Operation)

The accuracy of the Seeker suggests that they had actual psychic powers, specifically clairvoyancy and precognition.
