The Reverend Ernest Matthews travels from Oxford to Gabriel Chase during the events of Ghost Light. He believes in creation theory, not evolution, and constantly argues with The Doctor. He also argues with Josiah, but is unaware that Josiah is an alien. During the argument, Josiah gets angry and feeds Ernest bananas which turn him into an ape.
