Ellie Higson was a barmaid at the Red Tavern in London during the 1890s who became a good friend of two of its regulars, Henry Gordon Jago and Professor George Litefoot. (CC: The Mahogany Murderers)
She was deeply affected by the death of her younger brother Private Jim Higson (JAL: The Bloodless Soldier), leading her to seek the services of the spiritualist Mrs Vanguard who claimed to be able to communicate with the dead. (JAL: The Spirit Trap)
