Zachary "Zack" Cross Flane was Second-in-command of the Torchwood Archive's Sanctuary Base 6, he took charge after the death of Captain Walker when their ship crashed on Krop Tor after encountering the black hole which the planet was orbiting. Not really wanting the command, he nevertheless successfully dealt with the attack by The Beast imprisoned beneath the planet's surface and took the survivors away in a shuttle ship. Just when they thought they were safe, they found themselves drawn towards the black hole, but were save by the Doctor using the TARDIS's force fields to protect the ship and drag it away.
