Charleston was a city in South Carolina. Following a state convention of about four days in December 1860, it was the city where South Carolina's secession from the Union was declared, via the Declaration of the Immediate Causes Which Induce and Justify the Secession of South Carolina from the Federal Union. It was also a major centre for Confederate military activity, being the home base of at least the three units of the Confederate cavalry.
