Charleston was a city in South Carolina. Following a state convention of about four days in December 1860, South Carolina's secession from the Union was declared, there via the Declaration of the Immediate Causes Which Induce and Justify the Secession of South Carolina from the Federal Union. It was also a major centre for Confederate military activity, the home base of at least the three units of the Confederate cavalry. On 12 April 1861, Paul LeVal was ordered to report to the barracks at Charleston for induction into the 3rd Charleston Cavalry unit. (PROSE: Blood and Hope)
