Tech-Ops Reston was a scientist in the Kaled military who worked with his friend Davros in weapons testing. When Davros accepted a role in a mission to destroy a new Thal weapon development facility, he recommended that Reston join them, partly due to his expertise and previous combat experience, but also because Davros trusted him. While returning home after the mission, Reston was badly wounded by the Kaled city's automatic defence system's weapons fire. Not wanting to slow down Davros or be left behind for scavengers, he asked his friend to kill him. Davros, shocked that Reston was unwilling to survive, saw him as being weak and killed his friend.
