Evelina was the daughter of Caecilius and Metella and the sister to Quintus. She was forced to join the Sibylline Sisterhood, a local cult of oracles influenced by the alien Pyroviles. She had herself breathed in the Pyrovile's dust and had psychic powers. The Doctor transported her, with her family away from their burning house in the TARDIS, so as to escape the volcanic eruption. The Doctor told her that the link with Pyrovile had been broken, so that she was no longer psychic.  He also explained that her ability to see the future was due to Mount Vesuvius' eruption being so powerful (the Doctor told Donna it had the power of 24 nuclear bombs) that it cracked open a rift in time for a second and the effects echoed backward through time. Six months later she was living in Rome with her family and going out more as she was seeing a boy. (DW: The Fires of Pompeii)

Like her parents and brother Quintus, Evelina was spared from Pompeii's destruction by the Doctor's timely intervention.  Her psychic abilities had vanished with the Pyroviles (the Doctor explained that her ability to see the future was due to Mount Vesuvius' eruption being so powerful that it cracked open a rift in time for a second and the effects echoed backward through time), so she was free to be an ordinary young woman once more--and date, to her father's consernation.

Evelina, daughter of marble merchant Caecilius and his wife Metella, was a young Roman woman living in Pompeii on the eve of its destruction. Evelina showed some precognitive abilities, and so was promised to the Sibylline Sisterhood, a local cult of oracles influenced by the alien Pyroviles, as a consecrated priestess.

Behind the Scenes

 • The Caecilius family (Caecilius, Metella and Quintus) were based upon characters used in Latin textbooks, who in turn based on actual historical characters--but Evelina was invented by James Moran so she could be a member of the Sibylline Sisterhood.
