Publisher's summary

Whatever happened to the Doctor? He could be Gallifrey’s favourite author. Or a bad-tempered recluse. Or crossing the Alps with Hannibal. Or all three.

But an adventurer in Time and Space? Hardly... The family would never approve of that... they had other plans for the Doctor and the awesome power of the Time Lords.

References

All references occur within an alternative timeline
  • Half of Mutter's Spiral has fallen to the Thalek Empire, whose war cry is "Annihilate!". Unlike the Daleks from the proper timeline, they have morals and emotions. Their casing is made from the metal that would have been used by the Thals to make the neutronic missile in the proper timeline. They also are capable of teleportation due to transmat systems wired in their casings. Some of them are even capable of falling in love, as one Thalek was devoted to a woman who resembled a Thal.
  • A Supreme Council (rather than High Council) rules Gallifrey.
  • Transmats are commonly used around Gallifrey.
  • The Doctor has created a Possibility Generator, allowing him to explore virtual worlds and ideas.
  • Ordinal-General Quences is the Doctor's great-granduncle and consequently Susan's great-great-great-granduncle.
  • The Doctor's birthday is on Othermass.
  • The Doctor is Susan's maternal grandfather. By the time of her elevation to the presidency of Gallifrey, she has two grandchildren of her own, a boy and a girl.
  • After the Doctor leaves Gallifrey, his TARDIS takes on the forms of an old tree stump, an old minaret, a wardrobe, a revolving door and a black sarcophagus using its fully operational chameleon circuit. On his travels, he meets Winston Churchill.
