Hey CzechOut, | |||
Thank you for your advice. I should have read the manual of style beforehand. I'm used to editing on wikis that I have created, and therefore am used to their style. I completely understand and agree with everything you have said, and I will keep this in mind when editing here for (hopefully) a long time to come. | |||
I've just finished the new series of Doctor Who (and loved every moment of it), am currently watching Torchwood, and plan to go back and watch the entirety of the old series. This wiki is absolutely amazing! 30,000+ pages, wow! My largest wiki, the Dishonored wiki, is only 386. This is so extremely thorough and inclusive. So inclusive that the line between what should and shouldn't be on, like the [[Axel]] page I made... I'd like to thank you for your extremely polite message, it made me smile and showed the good in people. Thanks for your edits at Vincent and the Doctor (TV story)! We hope you'll keep on editing with us. This is a great time to have joined us, because now you can play the Game of Rassilon with us and win cool stuff! Well, okay, badges. That have no monetary value. And that largely only you can see. But still: they're cool!
We've got a couple of important quirks for a Wikia wiki, so let's get them out of the way first.
British English, please
We generally use British English round these parts, so if you're American, please be sure you set your spell checker to BrEng, and take a gander at our spelling cheat card.
Spoilers aren't cool
We have a strict definition of "spoiler" that you may find a bit unusual. Basically, a spoiler, to us, is anything that comes from a story which has not been released yet. So, even if you've got some info from a BBC press release or official trailer, it basically can't be referenced here. In other words, you gotta wait until the episode has finished its premiere broadcast to start editing about its contents. Please check the spoiler policy for more details.
Other useful stuff
Aside from those two things, we also have some pages that you should probably read when you get a chance, like:
- the listing of all our help, policy and guideline pages
- our Manual of Style
- our image use policy
- our user page policy
- a list of people whose job it is to help you
If you're brand new to wiki editing — and we all were, once! — you probably want to check out these tutorials at Wikipedia, the world's largest wiki:
Remember that you should always sign your comments on talk and vote pages using four tildes like this:Thanks for becoming a member of the TARDIS crew! If you have any questions, see the Help pages, add a question to one of the Forums or ask on my talk page. -- Doug86 (Talk) 17:32, November 3, 2012
Marnix Van Den Broeke
Hiya :) Thanks for your edits at Marnix Van Den Broeke! Since you're new around here, I wanted to drop by with some hints about how to make sure your edits don't get summarily reversed. Firstly, please note that your picture of this actor was great in a lot of ways. It was a clear publicity shot, and it was a jpg that was less than 100kb. So it was great on the legal front, and friendly to people connecting to our site on mobile devices over slow wireless connections. But it had a portrait orientation, which we try to avoid. We want widescreen dimensions where possible, but at least a 4:3 image ratio.
Portrait orientations cause pagination problems, because they often make the infobox far outdistance the body of text. See why this is bad at our guide to images. For this reason, your picture has been deleted. But please feel free to re-upload it, after you've cropped it to 16:9. (We don't need to see the space above his head or his torso.)
I've also deleted the infobox itself. It can return at some point, but we need to grow the text of the article first. The big thing is this: infoboxes are not substitutes for the actual article text. You never want to put something in the infobox that isn't in the body of the article. You, for instance, put his resumé in the infobox, but didn't add any content to the article.
The way we add content to actor pages like this is to list their credits and try to find some connection to other DWU actors. For instance, you noted he was in Harry Potter films. Thus the text should say something like, "He worked on <insert film name here>, with Mark Williams and David Bradley." For examples of how to add resumés to articles, please see Bill Paterson.
Again, thanks for contributing here, and please don't take the fact that I've deleted some of your contributions as a bad omen. We absolutely need your help around here — but we've got some rules in place of which you simply weren't aware. :)
