Reverend Small was a guest in the same place as the Fourth Doctor as he investigated the mystery of the Dead Shoes. When a Hornet entered the guest house, Reverend Small managed to bat it away. The Doctor took the Reverend to the theatre to see Ernestina Stott and her impressive feet. He was completely bewildered.

He was surprised to discover that the dancer wanted to throw herself into the sea because of voices in her head. While enjoying himself by the seaside, he was even more surprised to find the dancer pirouetting down the street. He removed the shoes from her feet, so that she was possessed no more.
