A DNA replication module was a technology that can cause damage from afar or control a person's actions. It required a tissue sample, such as a hair, to work.
By 1599, when the Tenth Doctor met them, the Carrionites were using the technology in the form of a doll in order to kill their victims. The Carrionites themselves did not call it this, but the Tenth Doctor recognised it for what it was. (TV: The Shakespeare Code)
