Messier 87, known as M87, Virgo A, and NGC 4486, was a galaxy located in the Virgo Cluster of the constellation Virgo. M87 was situated about 53.5 million light years from Earth in Mutter's Spiral.
History
The galaxy was discovered in the 1700s by French astronomer Charles Messier and listed in his Messier Catalogue. Circa 4,999,999,740 AD one of its constituent planets, New Savannah, joined the New Earth Empire, which was presumably set up before the aforementioned date. (COMIC: Agent Provocateur) By 5,000,000,023 AD, humanity was fully established (with a population of at least ten million) on the planet New Earth after the original had been destroyed 23 years earlier. (TV: New Earth)
The Macra were called the "Scourge of this Galaxy" by the Tenth Doctor while they were on New Earth. This may mean that the Macra originate from M87. (TV: Gridlock)
