Akhaten was a planet orbited by a number of asteroid rings. The natives of its orbiting stars believed that all life forms in the universe originated there. Every thousand years, the natives of Akhaten celebrated the Festival of Offerings, where they used to sacrifice the Queen of Years to the Mummy who served the Old God.
An unspecified incarnation of the Doctor previously visited Akhaten with his granddaughter, most likely the first.
The Eleventh Doctor also took Clara Oswald there, in response to her request for him to take her to 'somewhere awesome'. (TV: The Rings of Akhaten)
