Akhaten was a star orbited by a number of asteroid rings. The natives of its orbiting planets believed that all life forms in the universe originated there. Every thousand years, the natives of Akhaten celebrated the Festival of Offerings, where the currently allocated Queen of Years would sing a lullaby to the Mummy to keep the Old God asleep. However, they did not know that the the Mummy was not the god, but just an empty shell designed as an "alarm clock" to waken the Old God. The Old God itself was just a multi-millenia year old parasitic sentient sun.

A market in Akhaten (TV: The Rings of Akhaten)

An unspecified incarnation of the Doctor previously visited Akhaten with his granddaughter, most likely the first.

The Eleventh Doctor also took Clara Oswald there, in response to her request for him to take her to 'somewhere awesome'. (TV: The Rings of Akhaten)
