The Fifth Planet was the home planet of the Fendahl, which the Time Lords removed from the Sol system. Here, evolution had caused the birth of the perfect predator organism, the Fendahl. Consequently, circa 12,000,000 BCE, the Time Lords removed it from the Sol system by placing it in a time loop. The Sol system's asteroid belt subsequently occupied the orbit of the planet, 107M miles out from Earth, between Mars and Jupiter. (At least one Fendahl Core, "Eustace", nevertheless made its way to Earth.) (DW: Image of the Fendahl)

The exact relationship between the time looped planet and the asteroid belt remains unclear, given that the Time Lords did not physically break apart the Fifth Planet.

During the War with [[The Enemy], Time Lords from the Doctor's subjective future had planned to use a fleet of War TARDISes to undo the time barriers around the Fifth Planet in order to release the Fendahl. (EDA: The Taking of Planet 5)
