In the autumn of 1961, Michael Barry, the BBC's Head of Drama, resigned. Donald Baverstock extended an invitation to Sydney Newman to replace Barry. Although the Canadian accepted the position of Head of Drama in this year, he was unable to formally undertake the position until 1962, because he remained under contract with ABC Television throughout the whole of 1961.
