I think that perhaps seeing the way he reacted later on (with fear, holding on to her leg, etc) that she began to lose the love that she had for him. The events that take place during meeting the Doctor change her perception of Mickey, and after a while she sort of falls out of love with him and IN love with the Doctor. I think Mickey eventually realizes this but they are still friends, and he supports her. I think Mickey realized he could never really compete with someone like the Doctor and eventually found his own love. The Howling → Mickey and Rose's relationship
There be spoilers about un-released stories here.
Run back to the forums if you're scared.

Rose and Mickey's relationship throughout series 1 and 2 confuses me. Rose was happy to just abandon mickey to travel with the doctor but then acted "normal" to him when they met again. She was also upset if he left her such as in boom town or in the age of steel, even crying hysterically to Jackie however she never thought how her departures affected mickey. Did rose love him or not?

Also I wonder what happened off screen between series 2 and 4 to make them so distant that they didn't even speak to each other in journeys end. Mickey seemed fine towards Jackie but nothing was said to rose.

She was adamant to reunite with the doctor in parting of the ways, enough to say in front of Jackie and mickey that there was nothing left on earth for her and she would have preferred sarah jane to travel with her and the doctor then her own boyfriend and she shows this right in front of him whereas she was nice to him in the girl in the fire place when he first started travelling, even making physical contact and enjoying her time with him.
