In 1609, the First Doctor, Vicki and Steven visited Venice and had an extended adventure with Irving Braxiatel and William Shakespeare. Braxiatel founded the Library of St John the Beheaded and the Armageddon Convention.

Also in Venice was Galileo Galilei, who presented the Doge of Venice with the world's first telescope. (PROSE: The Empire of Glass) For this reason the Doctor claimed:

1609 is one of the pivotal years for scientific history.First Doctor [The Empire of Glass [src]]

The First Doctor also attended an "interspecieal diplomatic gathering" on the Moon during this year. He later recalled how it had resulted in nothing but trouble. (PROSE: Death and Diplomacy)
