The Wizard of Oz was a film adapted from the book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by Frank L. Baum.
Ace was named after the main character because her mother Audrey was a fan of The Wizard of Oz. The Seventh Doctor was also a fan. (AUDIO: The Settling) Audrey's mother Kathleen loved the film as well, as it took her away from all her miseries. (PROSE: Love and War)
Fitz Kreiner had seen The Wizard of Oz when he was a kid and it had terrified him, especially the scene in which the flying monkeys attacked the Scarecrow. (PROSE: Grimm Reality) A young Ruby Duvall had similar experiences the day her father got hit and paralysed by Michael Brack's motorbike. (PROSE: Iceberg)
When the TARDIS appeared to kill Alid Jag by materialising on top of him and crushing him, the Eighth Doctor compared it to Dorothy's house killing the witch in The Wizard of Oz, except that no one seemed pleased at all by the occurrence. (PROSE: Mad Dogs and Englishmen)
A phrase from the film — "I have a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore" — was quoted many times by the Doctor's companions and friends. (PROSE: Matrix, Vanderdeken's Children, Relative Dementias, Falls the Shadow, Return of the Living Dad, The Face of the Enemy, Autumn Mist, The Mother Road)
