"Food" or "foodstuff" was the name given to edible objects. It was consumed around the entire universe, by many species and different races. This was to complete the process of respiration.
On planet Earth, a vast variety of foods were available, such as chips, steak, fruit, doughnuts, sushi and many others.
The Doctor was rather fond of Earth food, most likely because he liked Earth so much in general. In particular, he had a sweet spot for jelly babies, fish fingers in custard and celery over his many incarnations.
