Alan Ellis was the son of John Ellis. On 18 December 1953, he was devastated when his father disappeared, having been sent through the Rift.

He married but never had children, and his wife eventually died. He began to suffer Alzheimer's disease and was admitted to hospital.

In 2007, John returned to him and he remembered some snippets of his childhood, but did not recognise who John was. His father later committed suicide by carbon monoxide poisoning as he saw no point to life without his family. (TV: Out of Time)
