Richard Charlesworth was a volunteer during World War II. He was stationed at Charnage House, where he and the other men took part in military exercises.

When Charlesworth met the Fourth Doctor, he thought he was a British intelligence agent. He was held at knifepoint by Leela so that she and the Doctor could reach the TARDIS and leave. (PROSE: It's a Lovely Day Tomorrow)
