Abel Gantz was an alchemist. He could change his flesh to any element or shape. He acquired this ability after a laboratory accident inadvertently caused when the TARDIS escaped from the Funhouse (COMIC: Funhouse) He met the Sixth Doctor and Frobisher on Xaos.
