A Matrix data slice was a Gallifreyan hard drive, a portion of the Matrix virtual reality.
Missy used a matrix data slice, called the Nethersphere, to upload and store the minds of recently deceased humans, later downloading them back into Cybermen bodies. (TV: Dark Water)
