North Korea was a totalitarian Asian nation. With its rival, South Korea, it made up Korea. China lay to the west, Japan to the east, and Russia to the north.[source needed] North Korea, despite being known as an isolationist state with grudges against other countries, was a member of UNIT.[source needed]
