Snowglobes were huge domes across the Earth which contained vast sections of the Antarctic and Arctic in order to preserve them from global warming. They were created by the Earth government and each was identified by number. Due to their maintenance being expensive, most became visitor attractions, leaving only three snowglobes to be used for scientific research.

Director Ben Wheatley claimed that he deliberately tucked away a St. Eligius Hospital snow globe inside Peter Capaldi's original TARDIS set. On the Into the Dalek commentary, he said that those knowledgeable of St. Elsewhere would know what that meant.
