The Curse of the Gibwyn is a Doctor Who Adventures comic strip published in 2013.
Summary
On the planet Medattia rival tribes are worried about people going missing – believed to have been eaten by the Gibwyn.
Plot
The Doctor and Clara arrive on the planet Medattia in 1875 where in the planets jungle they find two rival tribes (the Gibbles and the Wynals) have joined forces to hunt down the Gibwyn - a creature that has recently appeared, and one that the Doctor is determined to find first and save. They find the Gibwyn but it is scared off by the Voodoo priest, Cronker carrying a flaming skull who warns that the Gibwyn is a curse on both tribes, angered by the mixing of the two tribes. An elder of the Wynals tells the Doctor not to mock Cronker and how, just before the Gibwyn first appeared, his son had fallen in love with a Wynal - and that both had soon disappeared without trace. The Doctor remains unconvinvinced by Cronkers Voodoo powers and using his sonic screwdriver summons the Gibwyn back and detects two heart beats. Knocking Cronker's flaming skull from his hands it is revealed to be a genetic bonding device disguised as spooky magic. With the device destroyed the Gibwyn appears to seperate into two halves - two seperate people- the young lovers that had gone missing. Exposed for his deception Cronker's efforts to keep the two tribes tribes seperate is finally ignored as both tribes inviting the Doctor and Clara to the wedding. Clara remarks that had she known she would have worn a hat but dismisses the Doctors notion to have worn a fez!
Named Characters
References
- The Doctor's reason for taking Clara to a 'stinking swamp' on Medattia was "looking for monsters of course!"
- Either the Doctor's arrival in events is perfectly timed to the evening of the hunt or that this is the culmination of a longer stay, the Doctor would appear to have a greater understanding of the Gibwyn than would be expected.
Notes
- For an adventure that occurs on an alien planet it is odd that the first frame dates it as events as 1875.
- The Curse of the Gibwyn has a unique theme for a DWA comic story, that of the idea of racial purity.
Original print details
- Publication with page count and closing captions
- DWA 322 (4 pages) More adventures next time
- No reprints to date.
Continuity
- When the Doctor mentions that he could have worn his fez at the wedding Clara is quick to dismiss the idea.
- As a symbol of fear, a flaming skull was used by the First Doctor and his companions to escape the Cave of Skulls. (TV: An Unearthly Child).
- Like TV: Hide, The 'monster ' of the adventure is really just a couple in love.
