Martin Chisom lived in Yorkshire, where he grew rhubarb in a forcing shed. While tending it, he came under attack from the plant, which constricted him. He was found by his friends, Brian and Claire Forest some hours later.
When the Third Doctor happened to arrive, wanting to buy some rhubarb, he was mistaken for a medical doctor. He inspected the ailing Chisom and went down to the shed where he discovered a metal bug to be behind the attack. Through negotiations, the Doctor agreed a settlement wherein Chisom would provide manure to the bug in return for "the tenderest rhubarb in the galaxy, grown at a rate unheard of on Earth."
