Dead Man was a lonely man. He thought he was dead with the rats. He was fearful of the Steamroller Man. He had no eyes when Nyssa and Simon Valdac saw him. He told the Fifth Doctor that he was the guardian of Shadow Space and was a dead man's switch. (AUDIO: Masquerade)
