Christmas Special was the seventh short story in the Short Trips anthology Short Trips: A Christmas Treasury. It was written by Marc Platt. It featured the Sixth Doctor.

Summary

The Doctor has seen a television in an antique shop, but never had time or money to buy it. One day, he hears a knock on the TARDIS door, and the television is waiting outside. He brings it in, turns it on, and begins to watch, soon falling asleep.

The Doctor dreams that his life becomes the basis for a TV programme which is cancelled for no apparent reason and then begrudgingly returned opposite Coronation Street.

The Doctor wakes, and decides he won't let this television spoil his Christmas. He heaves it out of the TARDIS.

Notes

  • The dream mirrors the real-life situation from the late 1980s when Doctor Who on the BBC aired directly opposite "Corrie" on ITV. The long-running soap opera (the only UK dramatic series to surpass Doctor Who in longevity) consistently scored higher ratings against the later seasons of Doctor Who.
