Michael Ashworth was a UNIT soldier. He was the son of General Terrence Ashworth and Doctor Joyce Brunner.
When he joined UNIT, a number of his fellow soldiers thought the Third Doctor was a grandstander who often got UNIT troops killed. Michael defended the Doctor until the Time Lord's actions unintentionally caused Michael's friend Andy's death.
