Tess was a dog owned by Ben Parsons when he was young boy. In 1920, his father unfortunately had to shoot her due to the fact that she was experiencing pain from a physical disease.
The Shroud utilised the memory of Tess in Ben's future mind in an attempt to quench his happiness.(PROSE: Shroud of Sorrow)
