Emma Braithewaite was a Voluntary Aid Detachment during World War I.

Emma once saw The Battle of the Somme at the Odeon cinema in Leeds and was shocked by the machines of death that the Germans were using to kill troops. She took a job as a VAD at Hawkswick Hall after she received the telegram that her brother had died in Cambrai. (PROSE: Casualties of War)
