The Player was a renegade Time Lord who tried to hide from the War.
He encountered the First Doctor after his timeline had been altered by the Enemy so that he would not regenerate in the South Pole. The Player helped the Doctor get back on the right path. He knew then that he would have to fight on the front lines of the War. (AUDIO: The Plague of Dreams)
