Carl Readon was a human scientist who spent years working on a robot with his partner Jane Francis. Jane often kept her dog in the laboratory, which greatly annoyed Readon. After the robot, named Robbie, was finished, Readon insisted that she keep the dog out of their work space. That night, Robbie crashed out of the building, marching some distance away. After police and military intervention failed, Readon attempted to approach the robot in person. Robbie, emotionally confused, attacked Readon.
