A cat was present at the time that the Daleks were testing their new Earthmen Detector. When the First Doctor, Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright saw the Daleks coming, they hid down a manhole. The Daleks decided to test their new Earthmen Detector - which detected the hiding companions. However, just at the same time the cat ran past them, leading them to think that the Earthmen Detector was faulty as it detected a cat instead of humans.
